There’s Still Time to Turn the Year Around

With the end of the year approaching, it can be tempting for small business owners to start winding down and focus on getting through the Christmas period. But before you write off the remaining months of 2026, consider this: there is still time to make meaningful progress.

Whether you want to increase sales, improve profitability or get your team working more effectively, a few focused actions now can put your business in a much stronger position heading into 2027. Here are five practical steps you can take before December.

1. Revisit Your Business Goals

Take a moment to look at the goals you set at the beginning of the year. Which ones have you achieved? Which are still outstanding? And which are no longer relevant? Rather than trying to achieve everything at once, identify two or three priorities that could make the biggest difference to your business before the year ends. Having a clear focus will help you use the remaining weeks more effectively.

2. Give Your Sales Activity a Boost

If sales have been slower than expected, now is the time to take action rather than waiting for January. Reconnect with previous customers, follow up outstanding quotes, revisit prospects who haven’t made a decision and look for opportunities to generate additional business from existing relationships. Small improvements in sales activity can make a difference, particularly when your team has a clear plan and knows where to focus its efforts.

Time for a review

3. Review Your Business Performance

Being busy doesn’t necessarily mean your business is performing well. Look beyond revenue and review your expenses, profit margins, cash flow and outstanding invoices. Are there costs you could reduce? Are certain products or services delivering better returns than others? Understanding what is working and what isn’t will help you make better decisions before the new year begins.

4. Address What’s Holding Your Business Back

Every business has areas that could work better. Perhaps you’re spending too much time managing day-to-day tasks, your team needs additional support or important processes are slowing things down. Identify the biggest frustrations or obstacles affecting your business and choose one or two to address before December. You don’t need to overhaul everything. Sometimes fixing a small but persistent problem can free up valuable time and improve productivity.

Time to plan

5. Start Planning for 2027 Now

Don’t wait until January to start thinking about next year’s direction. Consider what you want your business to achieve in 2027 and what needs to change to make it happen. Think about sales targets, staffing, marketing, customer relationships and the resources you’ll need. Most importantly, turn your goals into practical actions with clear responsibilities and timeframes.

Make the Most of the Time You Have Left

There is no need to wait for a new year to make positive changes in your business. By reviewing your performance, focusing on sales, addressing challenges and planning ahead, you can finish 2026 with greater confidence and momentum. The key is knowing where to focus your attention and having a clear plan to move forward. To find out more about the benefits Business Coaching can bring to your small business, click here.
